For today’s blog post I have decided to share an insight to how I created the eye-look in the picture below, which also happens to be my most recent Instagram post (Judithsarahmakeup). To show the steps I went through to achieve the sunset eyes, I have created a step by step pictorial – which is something I have never done before. So, while playing around with my makeup the other night, I took pictures of every step I carried out until the final outcome was achieved.
On any occasion that I do my makeup where I want the outcome of my eyes to be the centre of attention, I will always do my eye makeup before anything else. However, I tend to start the whole eye makeup routine by filling in my eyebrows. In the pictures below I have already filled in my eyebrows using Revolution Pro Microblading Precision Eyebrow Pencil and Maybelline Browprecise Fiber Filler (if you want a blog post explaining my brow routine in greater detail let me know!) I have then neatened the underneath of my eyebrows with Makeup Revolution Define & Conceal concealer which I also used as my eyeshadow base.
Step 1:
To start off the sunset eye, I initially packed a yellow eyeshadow into my crease and blended out the harsh edges. The eyeshadow I used was called Ph Ma from a brand called Bleach London. I find that this eyeshadow is very soft and takes a lot of the product to build it up to its true potential, but use it with the correct base and you won’t be disappointed – it also works its best when the base isn’t set!
Step 2:
For the eye to start looking sunset inspired, obviously deeper colours need to be incorporated. So, for step 2 pack an orange eyeshadow into the crease but on a smaller blending brush! I used an orange eyeshadow called Hashtag from the Holy Grail palette by Violet Voss. Once the eyeshadow is packed into the crease start to blend it out into the yellow but be careful not to go above the yellow, the yellow still needs to be seen. (Not quite sure why this picture has made the blend look at bit odd but I can assure you it didn’t look that this in person!)
Step 3:
Again, the ombre sunset effect needs to have even more depth to it, which is why step 3 is to add an even deeper shade to the eye look. In this step I have used Wine N Dine from the same Violet Voss palette as the orange shade was from. Depending on an eyeshadow look, the deeper the eyeshadow shade gets, the smaller the blending brush needs to be. So, on a smaller brush then previously, I packed the deep pink onto the outer corner of my lid and blended it into the orange in my crease.
Step 4:
This step is where the crease gets “cut”! On a small, defined brush and a very careful hand follow the natural shape of your eyes crease and “cut” it with concealer. I have used the same Makeup Revolution Define & Conceal concealer that I used as the eyeshadow’s base. I have found from trial and error, that a concealer that is a few shades lighter than the skin works better when cutting the crease. This is because it shows more of a drastic difference which overall creates a more dramatic, eye-catching look.
Step 5:
This step is all about blending and neatening up the edge of where the concealer finishes. Pack the most recent eyeshadow – Wine N Dine – on the edge of the concealer and blend it into the outer corner of the lid and the lower part of the crease; it is blended into where the same shade has been blended previously.
Step 6:
This step isn’t detrimental and doesn’t particularly need to be done to complete the sunset inspired eye, however, it does warm up and add dimension to the pigment that will be added on top. In this step, right on top of the concealer, I have applied Sephora Colourful Eyeliner in the shade Long Song. It looks a bit odd initially but once the pigment is on top it there is no issue.
Step 7:
This step in any look I create is my favourite, as the addition of a shimmery pigment always brings the look together and makes it look complete! The pigment I have used for this look is actually a white, mineral, powered highlighter called Lustre Illuminator by Bella Pierre Cosmetics. Despite being a white highlighter, when it is used on top of the pink eyeliner it blends and picks up a pinky colour which in my opinion is beyond stunning.
Before I completed the final steps of the eye look, I started to do my face makeup by creating the base. So, before blending out eyeshadow on my lower waterline I primed my face, applied foundation and concealer and set them in place. When applying the foundation and concealer around my eyes I was careful and used them to help clean up the shape of the eyeshadow.
Step 8:
This step is what ties the whole eye look together – blending of the lower lash line. I started by blending the deepest colour first, which was Wine N Dine, so it was nearest the lash line. I then blended Wine N Dine out with the orange (Hashtag), which was the blended out by the yellow (Ph Ma).
Once step 8 is achieved the makeup look is more-a-less complete, just pop on some lashes and the finish off the face makeup. The eye lashes that I wore with this look were Tempt Me eyelashes by Girls With Attitude.
